I could see that this was going to be one of those where there are a zillion possibilities, so got out pad and pencil and made a list before taking a stab at which might be the right word.....and I lucked out!

Yep, a long time ago I decided it was good to experiment on paper first before committing to putting a potential word to the test..... Sometimes the more unlikely possibility turns out to be the correct answer! This strategy pays off fairly often, but not always.
