Captive market, eh. A drug without which a type 1 diabetic cannot survive. What would you pay?

There is no shame in corporate America. None whatsoever. The R&D costs of insulin have been reaped a zillion times already. And they can't say they plow the profits back into R&D of new drugs. The big pharmas outsource that "investment" (read: cuttable cost) so they can drop it like a hot potato if their market cap takes a little dip now and then. The contracts for that stuff read like the kind of terms and conditions (and, arbitration) that you or I agree to when just subscribing to a streaming service or getting a credit card. Upside to the company, downside to the supplicant...

Yeah we are all supplicants now, not "applicants" or "consumers" or "clients." Hoping for crumbs if push comes to shove. That's one thing when it's about a movie or a disputed transaction on plastic, but something else when lives are certifiably at stake. We have a messed up healthcare system for sure.
