Quite a speech by Angela Merkel... annual acknowledgment of "the best and worst of German history" 9 Nov 1938 Kristalnacht pogroms, 9 Nov 1989 the fall of the Berlin wall, and just past 30 Oct 2020, the 30th anniversary of the reunification of Germany, which she noted as "not possible without the trust of the Americans in particular".... and then she added lengthy congratulations to Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the 2020 US Presidential election.

French president Macron phoned Biden on Tuesday to congratulate Biden and Harris and to indicate intent to work on issues of interest to both countries -- "climate, health, the fight against terrorism and the defence of fundamental rights" per statement later from the Elysee Palace.

Brilliant; I have to say - and I say this as someone who has voted liberal/left all my life - I would be very tempted to vote for Dr Merkel if I was German.

My German sister-in-law - who is a passionate and ardent Green (and has been a passionate and ardent Green since we first met, around 30 years ago and is also quite left), confessed to similar feelings.

Sober, serious, qualified, experienced, decent, hard-working, responsible, thoughtful, - respectful of history, traditions, responsibilities, - calm, composed, cautious, who yet exercises good judgment, a person of integrity who is informed by ethics, and formidably intelligent, Dr Merkel rocks.

Now that's how you do it.
Properly.

Take note Boris "Pfeffel The Ovenready".
That's how you do it.

You don't just send a badly photoshopped tweet…
Yes, that photo-shopped tweet is lazy, contemptuous, arrogant, entirely characteristic of Mr Johnson, and - good grief - so, so, embarrassing.
