This has happened for a long time off and on with my iMac and now I notice it happening on my new Macbook Pro, it doesn't happen all the time which makes it hard to reproduce. When I open the lid (or unlock my iMac) the connection shows and is there but it will not connect to the internet, it throws an error connecting because it times out.

On my MBP I did check prevent from sleeping under my power adapter settings and that did not change it. I basically have to wait for 2 or 3 minutes when this happens, disconnecting and re-connecting makes no difference. Any ideas?

have you checked the following to make sure they are turned on:
on main Network pref pane Automatically join this network
on Advanced pref pane Remember networks this computer has joined
on Advanced pref pane drag yr most frequently preferred network to the very top

All checks out. It also doesn't disconnect from the network, it just doesn't work (connect to the internet) for a couple of minutes. I also wonder if it could be something with my router but everything else works as it should without any issues.

i see. i had that problem many years ago but not within the last few years.
router lease maybe should be shorter so that it doesnt search for a lease that no longer exists for your device.
then restart yr router.
then delete the wifi config on yr device and rejoin it
saying that, i have no idea :( sorry....
