That's not how the Rs who are trying to thread this needle for months or years now with Donald Trump and his supporters are going to try to keep threading it.

They don't seem to realize that the way to break free of needing a nonexistent voter base bigger than the one they can currently keep on board is to switch parties or create one with a platform that can attract more voters.

I honestly don’t see how the Republicans can escape now being the party of lies and conspiracy theories. They flushed their traditional values down the toilet with Trump and before Trump they were largely just becoming the party of local and state elections. Their message doesn’t appeal nationally if they tell the truth. When they’re not praising Trump and his supporters they deflect every question with “Socialism!” or “political correctness”. It’s just upsetting how many rubes show up to vote.

Okay, and when this is over--and it may take quite a while--what are the next two weeks and beyond going to be like? Does this die down? I wouldn't bet on it. In fact, I expect either extremely intense security for Biden's inauguration, or maybe even the inauguration taking place at some undisclosed location.

The inauguration should be a small affair, if for no other reason than Covid. The hospitals are already overwhelmed. They don't need to make it worse with a stream of conservative news hosts and anchors arriving with broken backs from how fast they do a 180 on "super spreader event!!!"

It's already been made really small with a lot of traditional events just cancelled. It's too bad really. It was going to be sad having it be small just over covid. To have it be made smaller because of a bunch of antidemocratic sore losers seems just... ridiculous but probably necessary. Far better safe than sorry.

I’m watching proceedings in the Senate now. All the senators appear to be backtracking on blocking Biden’s election. The results seem certain to be certified tonight.

Update: Even Kelly Loeffler flip-flopped.

Same.

Goddamit, we were on a dry 3 day run, but today was definitely cause for a drink ... or several. 🤪

Staffers are now resigning or considering it.

Stephanie Grisham, the former White House communications director and press secretary and current chief of staff for first lady Melania Trump, submitted her resignation Wednesday afternoon, effective immediately, in the wake of the violent protests, a White House official says.
While there are only 14 days left in Trump's administration -- and many aides' final days will come before January 20 -- many are disgusted by the President's behavior and no longer believe they can serve him. Whether more join Grisham in resigning remains to be seen, but the level of frustration inside the White House is leading to a growing sense that Trump will be more isolated than ever in his final days in office.

Several of President Trump’s top aides, including national security adviser Robert O’Brien, are considering resigning in the wake of his response to a pro-Trump mob breaching the US Capitol today.

O’Brien, deputy national security adviser Matt Pottinger, and deputy chief of staff Chris Liddell are all considering resigning, according to multiple sources familiar. Pottinger’s resignation appears to be imminent while others could sleep on it.

Oh, NOW they are resigning. These remind me of deathbed religious conversions.

Seriously, though. He is becoming more isolated than ever. Staff resigning. People dropping their objections to the count. Pence won't back him up.

And the most ridiculous part is...he doesn't seem to understand why this is happening to him.

Who knows? Pence might have to invoke the 25th...if only because the Office of the President must continue to function, and nobody wants to be around the guy who's president now.

Agreed. I think it's a real possibility that happens.

Reached out to my MR Frenemy...who told me he's not a Trumpist, but Trump says "little stupid lies" and media makes big lies. He also said COVID will be gone on Nov 3. When I reached out to him in Oct to see if it's gone he said he meant the media coverage will change so it will be implied it's less scary. Media will report "cases" and not "deaths" etc (I'd believe him if he didn't say that we've "turned the corner", and that Cuomo is a mass murderer but De Santis is exemplary). Anyway. I checked on him to see where he draws the line. Apparently, not here:
