Meanwhile now it's a thing for GOP House members to resist Capitol Police checking reps through the metal detectors, and in some cases they are backing off. Louie Gohmert walked around it. Apparently the redoubtable Congressperson Boebert of Colorado aka the glock lady was eventually permitted to enter the House chamber with a bag that had set off the alarm and she refused to let them look in it. Big argument; the cops caved. WTF? And she is not the only one. I am tired of these theatrics really, but mostly because not sure they are even theatrics.

Every employee who’s ever had an important duty and done his best to fulfill that duty, only to watch his superiors cut him off at the knees, has just gone, “AAAAARRRRRRRGGGHHHHH!”

Yeah I don't think these antics are going to play w/ the Speaker. She has other things prioritized

like Jamie Raskin's bill to create an independent commission to declare the president unfit (since Pence and cabinet won't do it but the constitution says "other body as specified by Congress")

but Pelosi's not going to let this stunting by Boeboert and others pass. Tweet below is probably on the money, but Boebert's not the only one who's going to end up "going through some things."

But you know what, this is so typical of this version of the GOP. They just do what they do and then say "So? Deal with it why dontcha?" and they steamroll inconvenient protocol or rules to the extent they can, meanwhile talking about criminals and law and order out the other side of their faces. Bunch of wackos strike me as having personality disorders never got looked after...

The Alamo is an adobe fort (historical site for tourists) in downtown San Antonio. Individual-ONE went to the town of Alamo, a suburb of McAllen TX, which is on the Rio Grande (border river) about 50-some miles from the Gulf (very southern Texas).

San Antonio is nearly 400 miles north of McAllen and is itself about 100 miles from the nearest part of the Mexican border. Curiously, the way-southern part of Texas is extremely solid blue.

But, did he go to the right Alamao?

Or, rather, was the Alamo he visited the wrong one, unless he wished to stir up stuff about walls?

At this point, I think I am past caring. In a month, the whole jawdropping shitshow will be fading out. We will have an antic-free president who tweets maybe 10 times a year instead of 30 times a day. The crazies will still be trying to cause trouble but more and more they will be getting put down (not, unfortunately, in the way that is done with old, sick pets). Next Wednesday (7days/13hours ATM) cannot get here soon enough.

You might also note that I said Alamo TX is on the Rio, which is the border. Where they are building the wall. They are putting a wall next to the river (on the US side, as they must). Think about that. Think about the set-back. Think about how desperate we are for the suffocating stupid to end.

That is what the Guardian had implied, earlier, when I read the piece.

Yeah he was meant to go to the one he showed up at; the town of Alamo is near McAllen, which is a place in the Rio Grande valley where the contractors he picked trying to finish as much wall as they can before Biden is sworn in and probably on day one says ok that's enough of that already.

Anyway Trump might not be especially welcome in San Antonio where the "real" Alamo is.

I know one Texan who says Trump will have resigned by Friday. Crystal ball material there but who knows.

Pence could secure himself some political capital for the future just by tossing Trump under the bus. But with only 8 days left, he decides not to? When he’s sad and alone a year from now, I imagine he will be kicking himself for not taking this chance to buy himself the one ounce of redemption he possibly could.....

I am not sure Pence even if he were up for a 25A adventure would have the support of remaining Cabinet members and there is the question of whether they have to be confirmed or can be acting heads of agencies.

Past that people say it's a political consideration for Pence regarding his own future. I'm not sure Pence would have the support of the Party in 2024 anyway. Trump has caused his base to despise Pence for having supported the Constitution over The Don in the electoral votes counting process. It's also very hard to tell how the fracture of the party itself is going to roll out, and who will hold the piece carrying the GOP banner.

Surely by now Pence knows McConnell is white hot over the incursion and ready to have the Senate entertain a trial of the charges. And Pence realizes Pelosi will have the votes to impeach, and that some of them, maybe half a dozen or more will be Republican.

And of course I'm sure Pence would agree it would be better if Trump would resign rather than be tried again in the Senate.

The trial would be down the road aways and that means Trump's megaphone will have gone all the colder in the meantime, plus the investigations and arrests for the insurrection will be ongoing.
Trump could save some part of his legacy if he resigns now with some bullshit speech about a comeback later, which people are already saying the party will not support.
The RNC signaled support for him in their winter meeting but that was before Trump doubled down today on how his encouragement of his supporters last week was righteous...

Trump probably won't resign though unless Pence will pardon him. I think it's unlikely Pence would do that. It might even be criminal to pardon him, because some of Trump's pardons might be criminal.

This stuff is so convoluted. And Trump is still walking around free to try to wreak havoc in whatever ways occur to his rage-fueled brain.

Well the House just voted 223-205 to formally urge Pence to use the 25A. Basicallly telling him to stick his letter of refusal, and so moving right along there will be an impeachment vote in the near future.

There are no confirmed cabinet members left, so he cannot obtain a majority of zero. 25A does provide for this, the Congress can appoint a group to do the job, but if QTip does not want to do it, why would they? They need him to lead it.

I don't think the VP has to lead an indie commission to run a 25A...

EDIT: nope, you are right, it's VP ... AND yada yada or such other body..

What has been alarming for Congress members like Ayanna Pressley and their staff, who have already been specifically and frequently threatened by the far right, is that they could not really feel secure even while ostensibly regaining security as authorities worked to restore order in the Capitol.

From a Boston Globe piece about members of the Massachusetts delegation's experiences during the incursion.

...Representative Ayanna Pressley had two reasons to be afraid: She has alopecia, an autoimmune disorder that puts her in the high-risk category for coronavirus, and she is one of four Democratic representatives in a group self-dubbed “The Squad,” which has drawn ire and racist attacks from Trump and his supporters.

Because of multiple death threats over the past two years, running through safety drills and threat scenarios has become routine at Pressley’s office, said Sarah Groh, her chief of staff. Groh, Pressley, and her husband had planned to wait in Pressley’s D.C. apartment until later in the afternoon. That changed as the House sergeant-at-arms pressured lawmakers to come sooner, warning the crowds could get too thick to safely escort them in.

“I was deeply concerned,” Groh said of going to the Capitol complex. “It felt like the heat was being turned up in terms of the rhetoric and Trump’s aims to incite violence.”

As people rushed out of other buildings on the Capitol grounds, staffers in Pressley’s office barricaded the entrance with furniture and water jugs that had piled up during the pandemic. Groh pulled out gas masks and looked for the special panic buttons in the office.

“Every panic button in my office had been torn out — the whole unit,” she said, though they could come up with no rationale as to why. She had used them before and hadn’t switched offices since then. As they were escorted to several different secure locations, Groh and Pressley and her husband tried to remain calm and vigilant — not only of rioters but of officers they did not know or trust, she said.
