I think it's just about having fun, making casual snaps memorializing a visit somewhere special; the Golden Gate Bridge, Grand Canyon, Disneyland, etc. Something to share with friends. Something people who are not serious about photography do, just wanting to make some fun photos.
The not-serious-about-photography part I get, and the wanting to commemorate a visit to a location where they normally don't go and may never return -- a solo version of the old days of Dad lining up the family in front of a sign, a monument or historic vista in order to snap a photo demonstrating that the family was there......That at least makes some sense (until the individual whips out his or her selfie stick and blocks everyone else's view)! Smartphones have made it all-too-easy to shoot photos just about anywhere at any time. What about all those FB/Instagram and other social media images of people showing themselves doing something not-so-special on pretty much a daily basis? Just as bad as sharing photos of one's breakfast, lunch or dinner on a daily basis. What makes someone think that anyone else would really care?

Shooting photos on the moon -- now that's a worthwhile and definitely unique selfie!

The wife & I will take a selfie when no one is around to take our pic. For example, when we hiked to the top of Clingman's Dome in Gatlinburg, we took one of us with the valley in the background. Also took one on the Skybridge.

But to take them constantly, not really into that.
We do this as well, but the photos are for personal/family consumption only. They add to memorialization of shared experiences that we may want to revisit virtually in the future.

I guess I'd take a step back and reframe things a bit, first, just to address what I'm going to initially refer to as self-portraits ...

It's so much easier now - someone mentioned not doing it with full sized cameras (and even film cameras), well, of course, that requires setup, planning - since the most common device for shooting pics - a smartphone - has an easy to use front-facing camera (with a preview, so framing is simple), with all sorts of specific tech to improve self-portraits.

A photo can be more personal and engaging when there's a person/people in the pic, a photo of a couple of lobsters sitting in a bucket vs. me and Daughter holding one up and taking a self-portrait? No comparison.

Now my point in using the term self-portrait vs. selfie. I think what's being discussed here is the distinction between photos that contain a person/people, that was taken by someone in the photo vs. repeatedly photographing yourself without any additional content, just you, to share, pictures of yourself, to strangers.

Yeah, now that I get being cranky about.

A crime? No, of course not. Don’t be silly.

But if one actually wants people to be open to explaining why they do the things they do, it would behoove one to not poison the well, so to speak.

Rather than opening up and sharing a part of themselves, people are more likely to shut down and avoid the conversation altogether.

You are, of course, free to carry on however you’d like…but you haven’t gotten an answer from someone who takes a lot of selfies yet, have you?

I think you made a fair point. Well said.

I think you've hit on something quite accurately here -- thanks!!

To me this sort of comment is just bizarre and narcissistic all the way around:

"Most people put pictures of unobtainable swimsuit models on their fridge for motivation. This is what I chose for motivation. [photo] Me from only 2 years ago. I can get back here."

"Most people?"

Wtf?

Sigh: I don't usually employ acroyms, but, in this instance, it seems appropriate, fitting and apt.

Good grief.

Not only have I never done this (for what it is worth, my fridge is home to fridge magnets from places I have visited - such as, Istanbul, Paris, Stockholm, Tbilisi, Nairobi, Chernobyl....not "unobtainable swimsuit models"), it would never, ever, cross my mind to want to do this. What a waste of fridge space.

What idiot wrote and posted such utter tosh?

Relentless Poster?

If so, it confirms my suspicion that this was penned by a guy/dude.

No woman would write (or do) such a thing, and the only guys/dudes who would do this, (or write this, or think this) are the kind of guys/dudes who think they know that this is what women do.

Dear me.

Which, of course, only serves to demonstrate conclusively (as if further proof was needed) how completely clueless such people are about women.

To clarify something: yes, this was written by a woman (an adult, too, not a teen) and no, it was not a post which appeared on MR, nothing to do with MR at all. I ran across it somewhere else and was so stunned and appalled that here was such a perfect example of the "selfies" mentality and the narcissism about which I've been complaining -- it is certainly shown in all its glory in this post.

That first remark is what immediately seized my attention -- "most people"....?!!!! This person must be delusional if she thinks that "most people" put photos of models and actors/actresses on their refrigerator as "inspiration." ??!!!! Eh.... I don't think so! Certainly that simply never has occurred to me in all the years I've been around this planet. Maybe it is because I don't feel the need to be "inspired" by photos of models and actresses, and/or, for that matter, by quotations and platitudes..... And then to top it off, and this is what really got me, this individual announces that she has put on her fridge a photo of herself from a couple of years ago to "inspire" her now.... ??!!!! I suspect she is not dealing well with the natural progression of aging, among other things. At any rate, something is seriously wrong here, either with this person or with the society in which she participates, or, most likely, both.

My fridge, like SS's fridge, has magnets from various places I've been (although nothing as exotic as some of the countries in which she's been) and a series of magnets that were produced not long after the first iPhone came out, each small magnet representing one of the stock icons on the iPhone's desktop back then, and a couple of magnets with cameras on them...... I also have a calendar on there, too, as I still prefer a print calendar upon which I can quickly jot down a notation and also at which I can glance each day to see what the day holds in terms of appointments, library books due, social get-togethers (although the latter have been quite lacking over the past couple of years. Here's hoping that will change soon!). Sure, the calendar in my Apple devices is great but I still prefer a printed calendar. I also still hand-write my grocery list, too, and take a piece of paper with me when I go to the store, too....

As for what "most people" may have on their refrigerator, I would guess that many have photos of their family members, both immediate ones and far-flung ones, and probably a few of cherished family pets, displayed on their fridge, along with kids' artwork and perhaps schedules of activities in which family members participate, and yep, probably a few magnets from places they've visited as well.

Yes, I also make use of hand written grocery lists, - invaluable - and (always) a calendar - an actual print calendar (one of political cartoons), agreed, very handy and helpful for bins as well as libraries and other appointments - but that is attached to the kitchen door, not the fridge.

Mind you, the side of the fridge also played host to medical appointments and details for Mother, her GP, her various specialists (cardiac, dementia, hospice, emergency numbers, etc), the pharmacy phone number, copies of her medical and pharmacy prescriptions.....and all of those relevant and necessary names and phone numbers.

And, yes, I also remember - just below some of the fridge magnets, there was a small piece of paper, on which was clearly written, actually, printed, in my brother's handwriting, - a sort of hilarious and heart-breaking aide-memoire, for my poor mother - "this year is 2013" (and, in time, the year "2013" was crossed out, and was replaced by "2014", immediately below it, which was followed, in turn, by "2015". And then, finally, - the last year that appears on this fading list, because, by then, it no longer mattered, as my mother's dementia had progressed to the extent that she no longer knew the day of the week, let alone the year - there is "2016").

But no "unobtainable swimsuit models" - good grief.

Now that we established that women can also be narcissistic we also learned the correct way of decorating one’s fridges. Excellent!
I don’t know. Me two years ago is not something I would want to get back to, was probably the worst shape I’ve ever been in. I’d much rather have unobtainable swimsuit models if I had to choose. Not that I could ever envision having one of those on my fridge…

I think it's more the people that are addicted to social media. I think that's a lot of the motivation thing. The "Look at Me" that's become so much of a part of our society.

I always get that "Why do you post so little? Why do you have so few pictures of you?" Heh. I'm a 53 year old Man. Dudes don't do that thing. :D

My fiancee that's 9 years my junior, though? Yep - lots of selfies and posts on FB a couple times a week. :) To each their own. :)
