It just goes on and on. Every day we open up a new door on the calendar to see what will will be putting our jaws on the floor. Today was a good one.

and the R candidate for governor of WA hates democracy, which was pushed by those evil Chinese guys like Mao and Gorbachev

Nice thread title. It does rather feel that way, in a complete reversal of at least my usual enjoyment of the run up to an election day. I want this one to be over already.

Interesting to see who among the Trump administration and enablers manage to evade the press with more regularity these days and so stay off the public calendar. They're off trying to buy an island I guess, or updating their resumés after a series of unpromising private inquiries.

But the ones who remain in public view remind me of anxious dogs left too long chained to their tie-outs by the porch. So far the baying creatures still believe they'll be fed again. But one may wonder if the owner inside the house is even now realizing he's left the chain too long for his own safety, should he be inclined to step out there and promise one more time he'll fill those empty food dishes.

This has been something of a meme that's been spreading about through Republican circles. The whole "we're not a democracy, we're a constitutional republic." Honestly, it's just a pointless distinction, since the terms have been used interchangeably for god knows how long.

Whenever someone says that, I ask who they voted for in 2016, and if they plan on voting again.

You can call us a constitutional republic, and not be wrong. You could also call us a representative democracy, and not be wrong. You can also say we're a Madisonian democracy, and hey, you won't be wrong either. The whole argument is just people pissing in their own mouths of for the sake of tasting their own piss.

No.

It is preparing the philosophical (and political) ground in advance so that they can reject - for example - the findings of bodies such as the OSCE or EU if they conclude that the election wasn't democratic, or failed to meet the necessary requirements before it could be classed as "democratic".

They will be able to argue, so what if it is not democratic? We're not a democracy.

(Think of that as a veritable gift of a soundbite for individuals such as for Lukashenko, Putin, and Erdogan; in future, they won't even have to pretend that they are demcicarcies, as, between stifled sniggers, and helpless laughter, they can simply point to the US, the former exemplar and role model of such standards, as the model they are now faithfully following).

It is also attempting to shift the terms of philosophical and political debate so that their actions are - or can be - no longer judged by the criteria of whether they are - or are not - democratic - and, then, if they are not judged according to such criteria, then, it doesn't matter whether they are democratic or not, as they attempt to further suspend democratic rights and norms.

And, of course, we have Pompeo announcing he is going to release Ms Clinton's notorious emails en masse, which just may force her to drop out of the race. He says they contained classified information that should not have been on that server, but making them public is ... ok?

For today,

I note that Kumquat rallied his people on the WhiteHouse lawn today, speaking for only 18 minutes (probably because that was all the blank tape they could find).

Some folks are getting way out of hand in the last weeks before Election Day. At least the cops have arrested and charged the alleged arsonist who took out a huge Biden-Harris "yard sign" that a farmer and nearby residents had made from nineteen round bales, after some regular yard signs were stolen in the area.

Even the White House counsel is having second thoughts about Trump lately... or about the downside of Trump having "tweet-released" classified info that DoJ may sanely prefer to keep under wraps, over concerns like sources and methods or level of credibility etc.

Trust me the piece is worth a glance if only for the illustration at top of the article.

Letter from a trailer park owner in Fort Morgan CO:

TO ALL TENANTS:
Please understand IF Joe Biden is elected as our next President, everything you do and have to pay for will change completely.
Everything will be increased. Like paying ALOT (sic) more in taxes, utilities, gasoline, groceries, new permits, fees and regulations…everything! This also means YOUR RENT will be increased to cover these expenses. Most likely, rent would DOUBLE in price!
IF the current President is re-elected, WE WILL NOT RAISE THE RENT FOR AT LEAST 2 YEARS!
Voting is your choice and we are not telling you how to vote. We are just informing our tenants what WE will do according to the election results.
If Trump wins, we all win. If Biden wins, we all lose.
VOTE on November 3, 2020.

Wow that is insane. Not sure if it's voter intimidation or just renter intimidation, but it certainly reads like a veiled threat even if it's totally absurd. Voting is by secret ballot in the USA anyway.

There is no way the tenants of that trailer park can swing the 9 electoral votes of Colorado to Trump all by themselves, and in no professional forecast is Colorado considered a swing state. It's favored to go to Biden by 10 or 11 points.
