I distinctly recall being told that Apple’s switch to Arm would make such a thing impossible because Arm is just a toy processor for phones and Intel Rulez.

I find it interesting how Apple is passively helping the Asahi folks behind the scenes. Hector Martin has mentioned it on occasion, how Apple will make subtle tweaks, such as to the boot process, to make their lives easier. Even though Apple isn't in contact with the project, they are clearly aware of it, and wouldn't implement these changes if they didn't want them to succeed.
