The US Senate also has a bill in the works. The House bill passed with 9 Republicans supporting it, although the bill was actually sponsored by a Republican and a Democrat. (but the Republican is Liz Cheney)

Both bills would make it clear that a vice president cannot alter the results of a presidential election and plays no other role beyond overseeing the counting process. The bills also make it more difficult for members of Congress to object to a state’s electors. Instead of a single lawmaker from each chamber, the House bill would require one-third of each chamber to raise an objection while the Senate bill requires only one-fifth.

As usual, house republicans standing firm in their efforts to make it looks plausible that Mike Pence could have refused to accept the electoral votes. An MSNBC editorial has a great snippet about two particular GOP house members:

But the votes House Republicans cast Wednesday weren’t about the merits of the bill or the wording of the act or the legitimacy of our elections. Their votes were about making sure that the people who do believe that Pence could have — and should have — installed Trump for a second term don’t turn on them.

You can see that when you look at who among the GOP voted to impeach Trump that second time but against the Presidential Election Reform Act. Only two members fall into that category: Reps. Dan Newhouse, R-Wash., and David Valadao, R-Calif. Of the 10 House Republicans who decided that maybe Trump’s incitement on Jan. 6, 2021, was a problem, Valadao and Newhouse are the only ones on their districts’ general election ballots this fall.

So these two folks - who voted to impeach Trump for his actions on January 6 - are now trying to save face to win re-election, and by doing so, are allowing the same scenario to take place. So damn aggravating.
