Think I'll wait to see that story corroborated by any of WaPo/NYT/AP/Reuters/PBS/BBC.

Unless I missed something, they're only reporting there would be consequences if she visits Taiwan.

It sure feels like the world's ruling class likes letting us know that 90% of us don't mean shit to them. If they've got big plans then we just need to suck it while they direct us into oblivion from their luxury bunkers.

They quoted a state-affiliated commentator's twitter account. They didn't force him to take down the statement

I don't think they'd be stupid enough to shoot down or even fire warning shots. But the communists are sometimes reckless, so who knows

At the moment I'm taking that as a commentator's opinion/conjecture. If that threat were to come from a Chinese government official, I think we'd be expelling a few embassy "diplomats" (at least those engaged in espionage under diplomatic cover) in WashDC back home.

Not HERE.
It also comes across as a silly PR move.

You're telling the US what you will do. If the US wants, they can find another way to get Pelosi in, and she's seen chilling in Taiwan. Making the Chinese gov't looking like ineffectual buffoons after such a provocative threat.

I can't imagine the Chinese gov't opening themselves up to such a PR shit show.

She could fly to Japan or Korea via US military plane. And from there fly commercial (with a few security agents) to Taiwan, taking just 3-4 hours. And then all of a sudden she's just there. All low key.

JFC that's a seriously provocative threat.
Yes, there’s no reason that the US needs to needlessly provoke China and move a naval fleet into place.

We see “Pelosi goes to Taiwan”, but behind the scenes our military hardware is moving in. THATS the threat that western media will not report accurately.

Pelosi is the distraction.

US, UN, and the vast, vast majority of the world officially recognize the One China policy. Taiwan is part of China, period. The US provoking here is the one outside our signed agreements with the world, making US the rogue state.

Oh wait, I forgot that America is an empire so no matter what we do in violation of our treaties and agreements means WE’RE in the right….

Bullshit! Taiwan has its own military, banking/financial system and political organization, all without input from the CCP. Many countries are bullied and/or bribed into supporting the BS One China policy.

The US has military convoys in the area due to Chinese aggression towards Taiwan and other Asian nations. Not because Pelosi may visit Taiwan.

The UN recognizes the One China policy.

US hegemony is waning, we need to play nice.

Who am I kidding, the US would rather destroy itself and the world than let go of being an empire.

By all means, show how Chinese aggression is even a blip on the radar compared to the US. Remember that this is a nation that literally threatens the families of UN personnel to get its way (Bush during the Iraq war).

We just want Taiwan because it’s one of our main spying hubs in China. The US has made it abundantly clear it doesn’t give a shit about people or their well-being as we’re actively causing tens of millions to starve TODAY in Afghanistan and Yemen. But, for “reasons”.

I think the CCP is still steaming a little when Pelosi unfurled a pro-democracy banner in Tiananmen Square back in 1991.

So the point of her trip, yet again, is to antagonize China while we’re already staring down a potential nuclear conflict.

This is absurdly dangerous and stupid. There is no reason to pick this fight right now, knowing it’s been planned for over the last 30 years.

America is going to have to settle for a multipolar world, or end it. There is no in between. Personally I don’t find this plutocracy worth ending civilization over so maybe we can pipe down a bit and accept that we cannot be the single global hegemon.

And you believe the UN is the final arbiter of the issue and have never disagreed with any of their decisions?

Red China. Communist China. The People’s Republic of China.
As opposed to
Taiwan. The Republic of China. Hell, even Formosa.

It was never part of China.

There won’t be any nukes. America and China both benefit greatly from their trading relationship (over $500 billion of imports from China-> USA in 2021). China’s not going to give that up just because Nancy Pelosi is visiting Taiwan.

We are clearly building the consent for the future war we want with the future leader of the multipolar world.

This is a PR step in that process. All military estimates expect us to actually fight China in the 2030’s. They’ve been talking about it since the 70’s.

I don’t understand this flippant attitude that America has, where we can just do whatever we want on paper thin pretenses that are hypocritical at best and cynical in reality. We have no reason to antagonize China, and when it comes down to it, barring a major restructuring of the world economy we’re going to lose badly when we finally try, until we’re facing a nuclear situation.

Detente should be the path forward for international relations, but nobody wants it for reasons that are petty regurgitated talking points. America doesn’t give a fuck about Taiwan outside using it as a color revolution staging ground against china, and the fact that we sold our state capacity to build ANYTHING for a couple of decades of Wall Street riches.

The chickens are coming home to roost.

I’m not a country, I don’t sign agreements. But the rest of the world knows that agreements with America aren’t worth the paper their written on given the attitude demonstrated in this post.

What is is, is America a global force for good (meaning it actually adheres to the “rules based order” we proclaim), or is it the global empire who can pick and choose what agreements to break? Ignoring that we point to alleged violations of other countries as reason to wage war covertly, economically, or militarily?
