I understand why Herdfan is asking the question. And I believe it’s a fair one. However, I was against a wall then and I am now. If you are for a border wall, then I would be curious to see what Biden's take on all this is and if he's had a change of heart.
I would still disagree with him - I'm not for a border wall (in general. There may be select areas where some walls make sense, but not hundreds of miles of border wall). But I also understand circumstances change and people can and do change their minds. Or flip-flop. I don't know enough about all the reasons for this move other than Mayorkas statements - which, to be fair, sound a lot like the more rational arguments some republicans were making. Not Trump, but more policy-focused republicans who took the border seriously and not as a talking point.
I'm still for fixing the root causes and not putting on band-aids. A wall is not even a band-aid. Republicans are going to win the battle on immigration if democrats don't start putting together a comprehensive solution. Using the republican solution from nearly 8 years ago - a wall - will empower republicans and not offering alternative solutions and plans for all the immigrants coming in will be a great point for republicans to make. "All Biden did was bash Trump's immigration policy and then copy it".
*I just heard Biden comment on NBC News. He said he doesn’t think border walls work and that this is being done because the money was appropriated for it and they can’t change it despite having tried. But that’s not what Mayorkas said… Democrat governors and mayors are clearly in need of assistance due to bussing and already high but established levels of immigration, and democrats are clearly figuring this out as they go.
Biden has clapbacks on the economy, he’s done fine there. He needs to get busy on immigration because that is the weak spot. Not the economy, not Ukraine, not the Afghanistan withdrawal.
I also think this problem was not as big as was being made when Trump ran, but it has grown into exactly what they claim. If they said “Well. we were looking at what was happening and sounding the alarm”, there’s no way to prove them wrong. So the time for debating walls won’t work now, time to offer a solution or republicans will offer their own and you won’t be able to blame voters who think immigration is the most pressing issue for looking at other options than Biden.
